History of Raksha Bandhan in India - 2010-07-29
India is known as the 'land of   festivals'. The rich culture and heritage of India can be dated back to   6000 years ago when Aryans created the Indus Valley Civilization. As the   time passed by, festivals and their traditions started differing from   region to region. The customs and traditions evolved from different   corners of India and today, India is a land that epitomizes unity in   diversity. Festivals and rituals   following them have neen the integral part of Indian society. Raksha   Bandhan or Rakhi is a traditional festival which is   celebrated all over India. Celebrated in the full moon day of the Hindu   month of Shravana, Rakhi commemorates the beautiful   relationship of a sister shares with her brother and vice versa.

'Raksha' means protection and   Bandhan means bond in Hindi. So, in   Hindi literally Raksha Bandhan means the bond of   protection. As name suggests, the festival of Raksha Bandhan is marked   by the thread tying ceremony. A ceremony where a sister ties the holy   thread or rakhi on the wrist of her brother. This ceremony upholds the   affection and the bond of love of the siblings. Brothers in turn   promises to give every happiness of life by flooding his siters with   loads of Rakhi gifts. Gifts given by the brothers to his sisters are normally called   as Rakhi return gifts. Gifts   hold a significant position in the overall Raksha Bandhan customs and   traditions. Even in these days, when the brothers and sisters are   separated by the cross country borders, sisters send rakhi to   USA or UK or any part of the world online and in turn brothers   compliment them back by sending rakhi gifts to India.

Like every other Indian festivals, Rakhi also has various myths and   stories attached with it. Though the historical evidences are not strong   enough but still they possess a great place in people's hearts. While   the myths say the first celebration of Rakhi was traced in the mythology   of Lord Indra and Demon king Vritra. Indra's wife once had saved his   life by tying a thread when Indra lost a battle against the demon king,   Vritra. There is another legend about the origin of this festival. The   story of Lord Krishna and Draupadi is the most popular among all. During   a war with the evil king Sishupal, Krishna was severely wounded. Seeing   this, the wife of Pandavas, Draupadi tied a strip of cloth torn from   her sari on the bleeding finger and saved his life. Krishna, pleased to   see her love and care, promised to repay this debt in future. How he   repaid the debt is all history. The legends of Goddess Lakshmi and King   Bali as well as Yama and Yamuna, Mugul   Emperor Humayun and Queen   Karnawati are also famous myths attached   with Rakhi.

Though Rakhi   has multiple stories about its origin, the core essence has always   remained the same. This Indian festival is now celebrated all over the   world with same gaiety and fervor. Sisters in India celebrate Rakhi by   sending exclusive rakhi to USA. Sometimes, they send   Rakhi to USA paired with loads of special gifts like gift hampers or perfumes, gift vouchers, sweets   hampers etc. While the sisters send Rakhi to USA, brothers   pamper their dearest sisters by showering surprise gifts like exclusive jewelleries, cosmetics, watches, sarees, gift vouchers etc. This popular   tradition of exchanging gifts on Rakhi is now become much more easier   with the emergence of online gifting portals. SendRakhiGiftstoIndia.com   is one such online gifting arcade which offers the service of delivering rakhi gifts to India. Not only gifts for brothers,   through this rakhi shopping mall, sisters living abroad can also send rakhi to India for their bhaiyas.
