Finding the Hungry
, 21 Nov, 2009
My tryst with the End hunger program has been a liitle painful but I was determined. First as per suggestions given on thisismyindia.com, I contacted the nearest mosque. They first tried to get only money out of me but I was insistant. I would only feed the poor and not their pockets. Reluctantly they agreed to feed the poor after the Friday namaz. I sent money for 10 food packets but by night time they had fed only 2 people. So I asked them to feed the rest the next day but they claimed they had fed all the 10. Once again they insisted that we give them a lumpsum amount for the whole year but I flatly refused.
Having not reached any consensus with the issue and after trying to get some other youngsters to work for the good cause, I finally went to the nearest Madarsa. Same story here, that it's best to give donation but as is with grandmas, I insited. Then we worked out a plan. My target was to feed 10 hungry people at least every week. So I chose friday and they agreed to send 10 children every week for the friday namaz and we would feed them in the nearest hotel.
The first week has gone off well and I am uploading photos too. They have 350 students, so that means I am booked for the next 35 weeks. Sounds like a good start. Meanwhile I shall keep a lookout for more such opportunities.
In our times it was easier to find the hungry and needy. In these times it seems like such an effort to earmark such people.
As an encouragement to my endevour do post comments so that I may not feel so lonely here.
